Time To Vote For The Greatest Acts In Rock

Posted on: April 28, 2008 11:24 pm

Well folks the brackets are now set.

I was surprised by the lack of votes for quite a few bands. I knew not all of my favorites would make it the list of 16 but I did think some of them would get more support. About 90 Bands were mentioned as well about 60 solo acts among all the postings.

4 of the 16 in the solo category could have been in the Bands category but I followed the way the votes were
cast. Tom Petty for some reason received 90% of his votes as a solo act and Carlos Santana got 75% of his that way.

Jimi Hendrix and Bruce Springsteen had enough votes to make the brackets and be seeded in the top half of both categories. I used my editorial powers to decide to put them in the solo category only.

Here are the first round match ups for both categories. The seeds are in parenthesis. Please just list your choice in each of the match ups. The voting for the first round will close on Sunday at 11:00 pm est. I will be posting the next round as soon as I can afterwards.

Thanks to all of for your participation as well as your comments.

Time To Vote For The Greatest Acts In Rock

The Beatles (1) I love the Doors, but I can't take 'em over the Beatles. Tough match for Jim and the boys.

The Grateful Dead (15) Hey Jonny! I can. I'm a tie dyed in the wool believer. Besides, I got all those bootlegs!

The Who (3) vs. Lynyrd Skynyrd (14) Just a terrible matchup for me. I saw 'em both. I love 'em both. I'll pass for now; at least.

Creedence Clearwater Revival (13) I was raised on CCR.

Led Zeppilin (5) Easy. I don't like or respect the opposition. Over hyped. Sold out to be MTV darlings.

Pink Floyd (6)

The Allman Brothers Band (10) Complete slam dunk.  The Allman's did more in their first 3 years to innovaite and create than most ever dreamed. They created a entire genre of music. Plus - No short pants! No costumes of any kind. No gimmicks period cause the Brothers didn't need 'em or tolerate them.  From guitar tandem of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts all the way to Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes, the ABB imho, has been the best live act around for almost 40 years now. (and the MTV type media hates them cause they won't sell out)

Cream (9)

Individual Artists to follow.

Time To Vote For The Greatest Acts In Rock

I think you guys are starting to step off the deep end when you attempt to apply these stats-laden matchups (who's the best HR hitter: Ruth/Foxx; Aaron/Maris; Bonds/Mantle) to a venue that's truly ART. And a subjectively viewed interpretation of art, at that. You might as well make matchups (what's the most wonderful work of art: DaVinci's Mona Lisa/Michelangelo's David; Dali/Picasso; Beethoven/Mozart).

About What's On My Mind
Well I have picked a new topic that everybody has an opinion on, The Boob Tube. I am sure I will see many shows listed here that I forgot about and a few I wish I could forget. There is no right or wrong answer here. It is just about what shows you couldn't wait to see, the ones you talked about with your friends or co-workers or were sad to see go off the air. I hope when you see the shows listed it brings back fond memories.
