Round Of 8 Ready For Voting

Posted on: May 4, 2008 11:22 pm

Well the first round of the brackets are done and there were a few very close races but no "major" upsets. So without further delay here are the results followed by the match ups for round 2. The numbers in parenthesis in the first listing is the vote totals. In the second section the number is the original seeding based on the votes received in the nomination process. And yes I did have to cast a vote this round since we did have a tie. I am going to tell you that since one other match up was separated by 2 votes I cast a vote to make it a one vote margin also. This way only I will know which match up I actually decided. I am a sneaky one.

The Beatles (43) vs. The Doors (10)
The Rolling Stones (41) vs. The Grateful Dead (12)
The Who (33) vs. Lynyrd Skynyrd (20)
The Eagles (33) vs. Creedence Clearwater Revival (20)
Led Zeppelin (40) vs. Aerosmith (12)
Pink Floyd (42) vs. Rush (11)
AC/DC (26) vs. The Allman Brothers Band (27)
U 2 (20) vs. Cream (33)

Eric Clapton (42) vs. Ozzy Osbourne (11)
Bruce Springsteen (33) vs. Chuck Berry (20)
Jimi Hendrix (37) vs. John Lennon (16)
Elvis Presley (33) vs. Johnny Cash (20)
Bob Dylan (31) vs. Tom Petty (22)
Neil Young (37) vs. Roy Orbison (16)
Billy Joel (28) vs. Carlos Santana (25)
Elton John (26) vs. Stevie Ray Vaughn (27)

Band Bracket:
The Beatles (1) vs. Cream (9)
The Rolling Stones(2) vs. The Allman Brothers Band (10)
The Who (3) vs. Pink Floyd (6)
The Eagles (4) vs. Led Zeppelin (5)

Solo Acts Bracket:
Eric Clapton (1) vs. Stevie Ray Vaughn (9)
Bruce Springsteen (2) vs. Billy Joel (7)
Jimi Hendrix (3) vs. Neil Young (6)
Elvis Presley (4) vs. Bob Dylan (5)

The voting in this round will be open until Sunday May 11 at noon est. Tell all of your friends to vote. No need to have voted before to voice your opinion. Once again I will not vote unless there is the need for a tie breaking vote to be cast. Of course as I did this time I will post a vote in each match up so no one will know if I even voted and what my choices were unless they want to go back and count all the votes.

Thanks again to all who have participated.

My Second Round Picks:

Band Bracket:
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
Pink Floyd
Led Zepplin

Solo Acts Bracket:
Eric Clapton
Billy Joel
Jimi Hendrix
Elvis Presley

Toughest choice was probably Pink Floyd vs The Who in the band, for me.

Round Of 8 Ready For Voting

Great, great idea for a thread.
I'm sorry that I didn't notice this until now or I would have voted in the first round.
And maybe I could have gotten 13 of my friends to vote too so that U2 could have beaten Cream. Oh well....

Here are my 2nd round choices:
Band:
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
The Who
The Eagles

Solo Acts:
Eric Clapton
Bruce Springsteen (Hopefully the eventual champion)
Neil Young
Bob Dylan

Very tough choices across the board. It's very hard to pick against any one of those 16!

Thanks for running this poll.
Looking forward to seeing the results

Round Of 8 Ready For Voting

Well, I lied, I am still up to see the results.  I have to say that I am surprized by some of the outcomes.  I never would have thought that the Eagles would beat out CCR, and I'm really stunned at Billy Joel besting Carlos Santana.  Well, what do I know anyway?

I guess I get to be the first vote in the field of eight:

The Beatles (1) vs. Cream (9)
The Rolling Stones(2) vs. The Allman Brothers Band (10)
The Who (3) vs. Pink Floyd (6)
The Eagles (4) vs. Led Zeppilin (5)

Solo Acts Bracket:
Eric Clapton (1) vs. Stevie Ray Vaughn (9)
Bruce Springsteen (2) vs. Billy Joel (7)
Jimi Hendrix (3) vs. Neil Young (6)
Elvis Presley (4) vs. Bob Dylan (5)

My picks are in bold.  As much as I love Cream, The Beatles had a longer run, and I'm sure that some of Cream's psychadelia was influenced by The Beatles.  Stones vs. ABB is a no-brainer for me, Stones hands down, but I've never really been a big fan of the Allmans.  The Who vs. Pink Floyd was a tough one, I went with Pink Floyd because I think that Darkside of the Moon is an album that has influenced so many people, and I can think of no Who album that is as widely recognized as DSOM.  Led Zep over the Eagles was easy, I like the Eagles, but IMO they don't come close to Led Zeppelin.

Solo acts.  EC vs. SRV was a coin toss, ultimately it went to Clapton for his contribution to so many great bands, as far as guitar playing, it's a toss-up.  Springsteen vs. Joel, interesting match-up, Jersey against New York, the nod goes to Springsteen, The Wild, The Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle is one of my favorite albums, and I can't honestly say that any of Billy Joel's albums even crack my top 50.  Hendrix vs. Young, had Hendrix lived longer, and put together a longer discography, he might have bested Neil, but I give the nod to Young based on a long careerin which he has consistently re-invented his music.  And finally, Presley vs. Dylan, for those of you who know me, this was an easy choice.  I love Elvis, but in the big scheme of things, he does not hold a candle to Dylan.  I've said before that when history looks back on the 20th century, Bob Dylan and Pablo Picasso will be viewed as the most important artists of the century.

Great blog Yank, keep up the good work.

Round Of 8 Ready For Voting

OK, I took so long I wasn't the first to vote, but I had to defend my choices. And I meant to type field of 16, not 8, oops.

Round Of 8 Ready For Voting

-I concur with Johnny, Yank-  This is even more brutal than the previous round, and I know it will only get tougher albeit with fewer tough decisions in the next...  (Deep breath) Here goes-

Band Bracket:
The Beatles (1) vs. Cream (9)  -Hated to do it- Cream were one of the greatest bands ever instrumentally, but they are up against the greatest band period, IMO...
The Rolling Stones(2) vs. The Allman Brothers Band (10)  -The Allmans are certainly great, but little question in my mind as to who is actually greater...                                                                                                                                                                                                                       The Who (3) vs. Pink Floyd (6)  -I was tempted to flip a coin, but in a definte squeeker, I am forced to give my nod to Floyd...   Most difficult decision for me in this bracket, as I love The Who, and they were a huge influence...
The Eagles (4) vs. Led Zeppilin (5)  -Luv The Eagles, but, well...

Solo Acts Bracket:
Eric Clapton (1) vs. Stevie Ray Vaughn (9)  -As much as I love SRV, he can't touch EC in terms of either longevity or influence...
Bruce Springsteen (2) vs. Billy Joel (7)  -Have to give it up to The Boss (Psst...   Don't tell the missus-  She's a big-time Billy fan!)
Jimi Hendrix (3) vs. Neil Young (6)  -I am a big fan of Neil, but in a few short years, Jimi revolutionized Rock guitar-  have to give this one to him on the strength of that alone.
Elvis Presley (4) vs. Bob Dylan (5)  -For a few years in the late 50's, Elvis was The King, but it was essentially about nostalgia after that, and hey, Dylan even wrote his own tunes

Round Of 8 Ready For Voting

Thanks for all the kind words so far. I agree these match ups have a few that are far from easy to make a choice. I am glad I decided to only vote in case of ties. I am pretty sure at least a few of what my choices would be will not survive  this round, but only time will tell.  It should be very interesting to say the least

About What's On My Mind
I have picked another topic that I can only hope is half as popular as the last. Everybody loves the movies. The Stars of a long time ago remain legends and forever young on film. These actors have created memorable characters. They made you laugh, cry, scream and feel every emotion possible. Of all those that ever appeared on the Silver Screen I want to learn who your favorites of All Time are. It will be interesting to see how the stars of yesteryear stack up to the new Kings and Queens of the movies.
